White as a color

"Glorious" private collection
Painting white flowers is not easy...I actually do not paint
them that often. You really have to use the background
to shape them or invent colorful shades within the flower
to define the white. I've done daisies and this white poppy,
some tulips, peonies and roses. That takes me back to when I first
started painting with watercolors and leaving the white
of the paper was such a challenge. I really layered on the
colors and before I knew it I had created mud! But what
"they" say is true, practice, practice, practice.

  1. I've been trying to paint some white flowers - nowhere near as successfully as this - just lovely! Wish I could get to one of your workshops but a bit far away, the other side of the globe!

  2. Annelein, Amazing how you used the white as a color. I'm just now starting to figure it out. Your painting is more than beautiful. Thank you for sharing all you paint with us out here.
