This is a fun exercise I do in my workshops...I've posted about this before. You divide a half sheet of wc paper by using white artist tape..try to divide it in odd numbered squares and rectangles. It's a study in variety, variety in sizes, shapes and taking one still life and picking a variety of images from that one set-up, trying for cohesion in either color, texture, paint application, theme etc..etc..I think it gets you out of the head set of trying for a "completed" painting.
Wow you nailed it right on the head, 'trying to create a completed' painting, everytime. I always do this and wish I wouldn't. I use to think it was because I didn't have a lot of money for good watercolor paper, so I had to make each one count, but thats not an issue now. I think part of it is that I really like a certain part of the little sketch, and think it could be a finished work, but not really. and I've been wanting to do a still life (finding the space to leave it set up is kinda tought right now), but as soon as we get our bed out of our main room and into a room of it's own I will have more space where I can spread out. thanks for the great idea,
