I travel with a little sketchbook that I have made at the local copy store. I cut pieces of my favorite watercolor paper (Fabriano) and then with two pieces of matboard(the cover and back) I have them spiral bound together. That way I'm using what I like and I can make it any size I want..this one was 7" square.
Great idea Annelein; how many pages does your sketchbook have in it? Does each page have the mat and back on the watercolor paper?

To clarify, the book contains 10 pages, but I've put more in there and the matboard serves as a cover and back cover only.. with the watercolor paper in between. Hope you make some!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea Annelein! I'm a Fabriano fan also.... soft press 300lb is my favorite. I'm dreaming of a sketch book like that now! Just curious which Fabriano you prefer?
ReplyDeleteGreat idea - bought ones are never the right size/type of paper etc.
ReplyDeleteQuestion - how do you get it ring bound, do you have a machine yourself or did you take it to a copy place to get it done?
Love this idea as I love ALL sketchbooks and journals. What weight paper do you prefer? Check my recent blog post about an art auction you might want to join.
ReplyDeleteLove your work and your roosters are always inspiring. n
Wonderful idea!!! DO you only paint on one side of the paper or both back and front Annelein!!!!! I love the fact that you can have your favourite quality of paper as a sketchbook!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your comments! I love 140 lb soft press and cold press...but recently bought some hot press... so the full gamut there. I'm also trying my hand at 300 lb soon. For the books I use 140 lb either SP or CP and take it to Kinko's/FedEx where they put it in their ring binding machine...easy peasy and only 5 or so bucks...oh and I paint on both the front and back sides of the pages.
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous little scene, Annelein! A true beauty!
ReplyDelete¡Precioso boceto!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea! I've been wanting to make my own sketchbook using my standard watercolor paper, but haven't made the time to follow any of the tutorials I have bookmarked. I like this solution better because all I have to do is cut the paper, the copy ceneter does the hard work (and it's not even hard for them!). Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteYou have beautiful little gems of sketches. I am glad to hear you use 140lb in your sketchbooks, because that is what I normally use. What a quick and inexpensive way to get a sketchbook of paper you like to work on. Thanks for the tip!
