"Sundown"

The jumble of leaves is my favorite part of this painting. It's a succession of layers built up by painting the negative space around the "positive" shape of the leaves and stems. This is done by putting a slightly darker wash then the previous one down and fading the leading edge away from the hard edge of what you wish to accentuate.

What balance! I like that big neutral colored leaf as much, if not more than the saturated bloom.
Enjoy your work!

You just reminded me that I took photos of gorgeous bronze sunflowers at the Vancouver Flower Auction. A flower worshippers dream. Truckloads of blooms. Now if I could just paint like this. I love the contrast between the strong orange and the clever background.

This is just stunning in every way!
You know how the saying goes,,,Think Positive....I think painters are the only bunch who walk around with the mantra....Think Negative....
Have you ever tried to explain the negative space to a cousin who has never picked up a brush in her life. She thinks I am off my rocker :) She said it is all those hours in my studio ALONE...that will do it she said!!

I love it!! Like Cathy said - every stroke! And sunflowers are one of my very favorites, so this is wonderful inspiration! Can't wait to see what blooms we end up with this summer!

What a stunning painting! I love the burnished petals from the setting sun too. The thick foliage is exquisite!
