shadow anchors

"Tea-time" 15"x11"
Warm sun streaming in to light up a simple still life. I like the way the shadows anchor the objects to the surface they are sitting on. I guess that's the whole secret to having a believable composition and not having your still life objects floating in space...although I'm sure there are successful paintings out there that challenge that statement...for sure Magritte's floating apple in front of the bowler-wearing man's face! ("Son of Man", 1964)

I really like this still life. The colors reflect how peaceful and relaxing a tea time can be. You really did a great job on the shadows.

Beautiful painting - and you are right...those gorgeous shadows anchor all of the items wonderfully.

I love all your paintings... how long did it take you compose and paint this painting?

All these yummy things in your still life with shadows makes me want to be back in my studio again! Alas, am traveling with watercolor journal in hand. WAITING for sunshine (see my blog!). So I am having to INVENT shadows this week.

Thanks everyone for your comments..to address your question, Diana...this set-up start to finish was probably half a day, with maybe some touches the next day. I usually just want to get to the painting stage and don't spend too much time with a "perfect" set-up. I've been known to edit and rearrange things! Take care, Annelein
